Technique Breakdowns

Technique Breakdowns
(insert video that explains how techniques will be taught and how to practice)
The technique breakdowns are designed to provide you with the basic knowledge to correctly perform each technique.  There are two general formats that we will follow when presenting techniques.

Hand Techniques
What: Terminology, the name
Chamber: Correct starting position of hand and arms
Execution: Movement from the chamber to resting position
Where: Target areas, part of the hand used to execute the technique
When: Appropriate times to use the technique
Variations: variations in the execution of the technique that correspond to body facing and stance

Attack
middle punch
open hand strike
Defense
low block
rising forearm block
middle block

Foot Techniques
What:Terminology, the name
Chamber: correct starting position of leg and foot prior to execution
Execution: Correct movement from chamber to rechamber
Where: Target areas, part of the foot used to strike
Position: Proper position of the striking foot and base leg as well as lean of the torso
When: Appropriate times to use the technique
Variations: variations in the execution of the technique that correspond to stance and direction of movement

Attack
front snapping kick
side piercing kick
turning kick
Defense
inside crescent kick
outside crescent kick

Chon-Ji

Chon-Ji
CHON- JI means literally " the Heaven the Earth". It is, in the Orient, interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history, therefore, it is the initial pattern played by the beginner. This pattern
consists of two similar parts; one to represent the Heaven and the other the Earth.

Directions:(full pattern)
1.Move the left foot to B forming a left walking stance toward B while executing a low block to B with the left forearm.
2.Move the right foot to B forming a right walking stance toward B while executing a middle punch to B with the right fist.
3.Move the right foot to A, turning clockwise to form a right walking stance toward A while executing a low block to A with the right forearm.
4.Move the left foot to A forming a left walking stance toward A while executing a middle punch to A with the left fist.
5.Move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance toward D while executing a low block to D with the left forearm.
6.Move the right foot to D forming a right walking stance toward D while executing a middle punch to D with the right fist.
7.Move the right foot to C turning clockwise to form a right walking stance toward C while executing a low block to C with the right forearm.
8.Move the left foot to C forming a left walking stance toward C while executing a middle punch to C with the left fist.
9.Move the left foot to A forming a right L-stance toward A while executing a middle block to A with the left inner forearm.
10.Move the right foot to A forming a right walking stance toward A while executing a middle punch to A with the right fist.
11.Move the right foot to B turning clockwise to form a left L-stance toward B while executing a middle block to B with the right inner forearm.
12.Move the left foot to B forming a left walking stance toward B while executing a middle punch to B with the left fist.
13.Move the left foot to C forming a right L-stance toward C while executing a middle block to C with the left inner forearm.
14.Move the right foot to C forming a right walking stance toward C while executing a middle punch to C with the right fist.
15.Move the right foot to D turning clockwise to form a left L-stance toward D while executing a middle block to D with the right inner forearm.
16.Move the left foot to D forming a left walking stance toward D while executing a middle punch to D with the left fist.
17.Move the right foot to D forming a right walking stance toward D while executing a middle punch to D with the right fist.
18.Move the right foot to C forming a left walking stance toward D while executing a middle punch to D with the left fist.
19.Move the left foot to C forming a right walking stance toward D while executing a middle punch to D with the right fist.

Learning Steps
1. Practice the pattern 3 times focusing on punching and blocking in the correct directions
a. Practice and memorize steps 1-8 before continuing onto the rest of the pattern
b. Practice and memorize steps 9-16 before continuing the rest of the pattern
2. Practice the pattern 3 times focusing on the correct chamber before executing techniques
3. Practice the pattern 3 times focusing on correct breathing.  Inhale on the chamber. Exhale when executing the block/strike.
4. Practice the pattern fluidly and rhythmically. Don't stop once you begin a new motion.

Pattern Builder Exercises
1. Saju Jirugi
2. Saju Magki
3. Punching Backwards
4. Middle block and punch

Tips
  • Techniques performed to the Left are mirrored on the Right
  • Turn in the direction of the attacking hand
  • Block then punch, punch then block
